Ottawa, ON – The Métis National Council has been preparing to hold a meeting of the Permanent Bilateral Mechanism with the Canadian Government. This summit is an important opportunity for the MNC and Métis Governments from across the Homeland to meet with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Cabinet Ministers and discuss shared priorities between the Métis Nation and Canada.
In 2017, Canada and the MNC and its Governing Members entered into the Canada-Métis Nation Accord, setting up a permanent bilateral process that includes regular meetings between Métis Nation leaders, the Prime Minister and/or various federal cabinet ministers.
Métis National Council President Cassidy Caron shared the following message on the eve of the meeting. “These meetings with the Government of Canada demonstrate both how far we’ve come and our dedication to working together in a good way. I look forward to sitting down with leadership from our Métis Governments, the Prime Minister, and Members of Cabinet to discuss shared priorities and ensuring that Métis interests are a priority for this government.”
Métis priorities for the meeting include discussions around principles of co-development, health, primary and secondary education, emergency management, economic development, languages, as well as other policy files of importance. The MNC and its Governing Members will continue to advocate for flexible, long-term, and reliable funding to best empower Métis governments to deliver important services to Métis citizens and promote Métis rights and prosperity.
