Métis National Council Statement on the Speech From the Throne

President Victoria Pruden of the Métis National Council (MNC) attended the Speech from the Throne delivered by His Majesty King Charles III on Tuesday morning.

“There is strong alignment between the Métis National Council’s priorities and those outlined in the Speech from the Throne today,” said President Pruden. “Implementing the federal government’s ambitious legislative and policy agenda— including the proposed legislation to accelerate projects of national interest— must be firmly rooted in today’s stated commitment to advancing reconciliation and creating long-term wealth and prosperity with Indigenous Peoples. This includes upholding the inherent and constitutionally protected rights of Métis, Inuit, and First Nations through a distinctions-based, nation-to-nation, and government-to-government approach.”

As the government works to grow the economy and ease the cost of living, the MNC is ready to partner on targeted, distinctions-based economic relief— including supports for Métis businesses and workers, investments in skills development, and steps to eliminate internal trade barriers that limit Métis economic participation. “A stronger economy must include financial tools that work for Métis, including a dedicated Métis-specific allocation within the federal government’s doubled investment in the Indigenous Loan Guarantee Program.”

The Métis National Council also welcomes the government’s commitment to climate action and nature conservation, as outlined in the Speech from the Throne. These priorities can be meaningfully advanced through investments in the Métis Nation Climate Leadership Agenda (MNCLA)—a plan that will help reduce future climate-related costs, drive Métis innovation, and support the transition to a low-carbon, self-sufficient future led by Métis Governments and rooted in shared prosperity. The MNC urges parliamentarians to prioritize the advancement of the MNCLA as part of the fall 2025 cabinet agenda.

The MNC looks forward to partnering with the Government of Canada to co-develop a clear and collaborative path forward ensuring that the commitments outlined in the Speech from the Throne are meaningfully implemented to foster the well-being and prosperity of the Métis Nation and all Canadians.
