MNC President Chartier Congratulates David Chartrand on Re-election
Métis National Council (MNC) President Clément Chartier is congratulating David Chartrand on his re-election as President of the Manitoba Métis Federation. “David Chartrand has a distinguished record of tireless service to Métis Nation citizens in Manitoba,” said President Chartier. “Under his continued leadership, the Manitoba Métis Federation will become an even stronger voice for the Métis Nation.” (June 11)


Métis Nation congratulates Dr. Tony Belcourt
Métis National Council (MNC) President Clément Chartier is congratulating Dr. Tony Belcourt on receiving an Honourary Doctor of Laws Degree from Lakehead University. “Tony Belcourt has dedicated much of his life to improving the lives of Métis people, and this honour is very well deserved,” said President Chartier. “His contributions have helped foster a stronger and more prosperous Métis Nation.” (June 4)


Métis Nation praises Manitoba Access Awareness Week
Métis National Council (MNC) President Clément Chartier is commending the Province of Manitoba for proclaiming May 30 to June 5, 2010 Manitoba Access Awareness Week. The week will be celebrated with several events intended to raise awareness of the barriers faced by persons with disabilities. “There are countless barriers preventing Métis Nation citizens with disabilities in Manitoba and across the Métis homeland from fully participating in society,” said Chartier “The Government of Manitoba should be congratulated for taking a leading role in raising awareness of these challenges, and helping find ways to ensure all persons with disabilities have improved accessibility in their communities.” (June 2)

Moving Ahead on Métis Economic Development Progress being made through Aboriginal Affairs Working Group
Métis National Council (MNC) President Clément Chartier is welcoming commitments from Provincial and Territorial Ministers of Aboriginal Affairs to work with First Nation, Inuit and Métis Nation leaders to improve education and economic development opportunities, and to end violence against Aboriginal women and girls. Government of Canada Supports Métis Resource and Energy Development Projects in Saskatchewan
The Government of Canada has contributed $5 million to the Clarence Campeau Development Fund (CCDF), who added $1 million from their own capital, to establish the new Métis Energy and Resource Program. “This significant investment demonstrates the Government of Canada's ongoing commitment to the long-term, sustainable economic development of Métis people and businesses,” said Minister Chuck Strahl, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians. “Building upon our considerable progress made through the Métis Nation Protocol and the Métis Economic Development Symposium, the Government is forging partnerships that will enable Métis to share fully in the economic opportunities offered throughout Canada.” (April 29)


Education, Training and Childcare Key to Reducing Poverty in Métis Communities
Métis National Council Vice-president and Minister for Social Development David Chartrand appeared before the House of Commons Standing Committee on Human Resources, Skills and Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities to testify on ways the federal government can help reduce poverty among Métis Nation citizens. “A successful economy depends on productive, contributing Métis citizens,” Vice-president Chartrand told the committee members. “Canadians cannot afford, from either a national perspective, or in their regions and communities, to see Métis people lag behind.” (April 8)

New project launched seeking improved employment opportunities for Métis Nation citizens with disabilities
Métis National Council (MNC) President Clément Chartier today announced a new project aimed at finding ways of improving employment opportunities for Métis persons with disabilities. “Improving skills development and employment opportunities for Métis Nation citizens with disabilities is a top priority,” said President Chartier during the launch of the project today in Saskatoon, SK. “This project will help identify the best tools and services available to Métis Nation citizens with disabilities seeking skills development, and find innovative ways of improving their employment opportunities.” As part of this project, the MNC will be partnering with the Canadian Council on Rehabilitation and Work (CCRW), the leading cross-disability organization promoting the equitable, meaningful and sustainable employment of persons with disabilities in Canada. Métis Nation offers sympathy and support to the people of Haiti
Métis National Council (MNC) President Clément Chartier, on behalf of the Board of Governors and the Métis Nation, is offering sympathy to the people of Haiti as they cope with the devastating results of this week’s earthquake. “All Métis Nation citizens are deeply saddened by this tragedy and the horrible toll it is taking on a nation already struggling with poverty,” said President Chartier. “The thoughts and prayers of the entire Métis Nation are with the people of Haiti.” President Chartier is encouraging all Métis Nation citizens who are able to make a donation or offer any other assistance they can. “Thousands of injured, hungry and homeless people are in need of urgent assistance,” said Chartier. “Every donation, no matter how large or small, will go a long way to easing their suffering, and bring some measure of hope in the face of this tragedy.” To support the Canadian Red Cross relief efforts, donations can be made by calling toll free 1-800-418-1111 or online at www.redcross.ca.
