Métis National Council Reacts To The Speech From The Throne
The Métis National Council reacted to the Speech From The Throne, 2001 today by issuing the following statements: Gerald Morin, President of the Métis National Council stated, "First of all I would like to commend the federal government for its increased emphasis on Aboriginal peoples in the Speech From The Throne, 2001". Throne Speech Overlooks Métis
Tony Belcourt, President of the Metis Nation of Ontario, has called the Speech From the Throne disappointing. He is calling on the Prime Minister and the federal government to fulfill the commitment to establish a relationship with the Metis during this session of Parliament, even though this outstanding obligation was overlooked in the Throne Speech. "The commitment in the Throne Speech to 'strengthening its relationship with Aboriginal peoples' is meaningless with regard to the Metis. How can you strengthen a relationship that does not exist", Mr. Belcourt said. "Despite the promise made to the Metis when the government announced Gathering Strength, its response to the Royal Commission on Aboriginal peoples, we are still without a framework agreement which recognizes the federal responsibility to deal with long outstanding Metis issues", he added.
